Close Encounters of No Kind I

(Kurzfilmprogramm / Short Film Program)
div., BRD/USA/Frankreich/Griechenland 1943-2015, 105 min, OmeU

Und was sagt Sigmund Freud dazu? Affen beobachten Menschen in Affenkostümen, Passanten beobachten Statisten in Passantenkostümen.

Is it possible that inconsistencies from the previous life influence us today? What does the speaking flea from Robert Musil dreams? And what does Sigmund Freud think about that? Monkeys are watching people in monkey costumes, passers are watching bystanders in passer costumes.
A Chinese village swallowed by an earthquake is replaced by a French one. Lost memory, solidified in possibility mode, caught in loops - remedy is given by introspection.
An undead revolutionary is defiantly squatting inside of you.

DER AUFTRITT

Francesca Bertin, Leo Kaufmann, BRD 2015, Dok, 4 min, OmeU

Villagers discuss their past lives in a bar. A short film for everyone interested in the secret of a neat conversation.

THE HAND EYE BONE GHOST

Anja Dornieden, Juan David Monroy González, BRD 2012, 7 min

Eugenie Schwarzwald, die einzige andere Teilnehmerin, schreibt: "A distinguished flea hypnozied the ghost of a distinguished man".

In early 20th century Vienna Robert Musil invited Sigmund Freud to partake in, what he called, “a very special séance”. Seated at the table Musil revealed that they were going to summon the ghost of Frans Anton Mesmer, discoverer of animal magnetism and forefather of hypnosis. It is said that Mesmer obligingly appeared and spoke in a repetitive and oblique manner. Mesmer’s words were transcribed by Freud in several scraps of paper and hidden separately in a series of objects that, owing to the vicissitudes of history, would end up in the collections of three Viennese museums. Legend has it that he who could piece together the text would find instructions for the assembly of a film.

PRIMATE CINEMA: APES AS FAMILY

Rachel Mayeri, USA 2012, Dok, 11 min, OmeU

Schimpansen lieben Fernsehen.

Did you know? Chimpanzees also like to watch TV. This induced artist Rachel Mayeri to make a film especially for our conspecifics: People in the built-up world of Homo sapiens sapiens, wearing ape costumes. How do the primates react to this? Television screens in their compound submit the film material. Camera people and their lenses record their reactions. The primates are the audience, but as well the objects of our observation. The boundaries dissolve. Where does the territory of the apes end and where does that of the people begin?

WASHINGTONIA

Konstantina Kotzamani, Griechenland 2014, 24 min, OmeU

The giraffe is the animal with the biggest heart. When the giraffe is lying down, its heartbeat touches the ground —it goes underground. All animals are tuned to the heartbeat of the giraffe. In the heart of the summer, in the midst of the tropical heat, the giraffe’s heart is no longer heard, the animals are thrown into confusion. As they search for this beat, it is then when the strangest things happen.

BAILU DREAM

Nicholas Boone, Frankreich 2013, Dok, 12 min, OmeU

Bailu, a small village in Sichuan, China has been destroyed by the 2008 earthquake. The Chinese government decided to construct a French village on top of the ruins. This 12 minute long one shot film follows the people of Bailu like a relay. This movie is a criticism to Bailu saying that you can experience the dream of a French lifestyle. The European style village in the suburb of China looks like a huge artificial space.

MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON

Maya Deren, USA 1943, 14 min, engl. OF

A woman returning home falls asleep and has vivid dreams that may or may not be happening in reality. Through repetitive images and complete mismatching of the objective view of time and space, her dark inner desires play out on-screen.

DARLING

Izabela Plucińska, BRD 2013, 6 min, OmeU

Was bedeutet Gedächtnisverlust?

What is it like when you have lost your memory, when you wake up and you cannot even recognize your husband? A woman wakes up from a dream facing a stranger who claims to be her husband. DARLING deals with loss, intimacy as well as alienation, helplessness and despair, but also hope.

DER OPTIONIST

Sylvie Boisseau & Frank Westermeyer, BRD 2004, 4 min, OmeU

Sicherheitsstufe 1, risikofreie Park-Zone oder doch was verpasst?

„I am a free person. I want to know, it’s like this now, but it could also be different. Everything’s possible for me. I could go everywhere, I can do anything, all woman suit me...“, says the daydreaming protagonist. He sits on a stone sculpture in a park and talks to himself, talks to an absent opposite: no contractions, everything is wonderful: The possibilities opening up, the imaginary as a phantasmatic cloud, hovers as a perfect state around this optionist, since a realization is not an option anyway. What is phantasmatic thus cannot be disturbed by the real.

ENCOUNTERS WITH YOUR INNER TROTZKY CHILD

Jim Finn, USA 2013, 21 min, engl. OF

In seiner flimmernd-hypnotischen Retroästhetik scheint ENCOUNTERS WITH YOUR INNER TROTSKY CHILD einem bizarren anachronistischen Paralleluniversum zu entstammen.

What if communists produced self-help videos? What if Trotskyites tried to stay relevant in the neoliberal era? Welcome to Jim Finn’s ideological fantasyland, where Jane Fonda’s falls in love with the left and starts teaching “inner Trotsky child affirmation exercises”. Don’t be put off by the quality of the image: this is a pastiche of the personal fulfilment VHS culture, by the man described by J. Hoberman as “the solitary vanguard of post-Communist Communist cinema”.
